5 Ways to Get Healthy Hair and Keep It That Way!

One of the first steps to achieving healthy hair is understanding why and how our hair becomes unhealthy. 

Most of us put our hair through lots of stress

We curl, straighten, or crunch

We color or lighten.

Some of us wrap our hair up in top knots, causing tension or even breakage.

Our hair cuticle can only take so much of this before the keratin bonds become too weak

Our hair may lose its strength and elasticity, causing it to become dry and brittle

This is how the most common forms of hair damage occur.

We now know how damage occurs, so what do we do about it? 

Here are five easy ways to restore your hair to a healthy state and keep it that way! 

Get a Haircut

The best way to get rid yourself of split ends or damage is to CUT IT OFF!

I suggest you see your hairstylist every 4-6 weeks to maintain your haircut and trim off any ends that have to go. 

Since your ends are the furthest away from your scalp, they tend to be the driest and most fragile. 

A clear sign that you need a trim is your hair is hard to detangle

Your ends may snag or feel like straw. YUCK!

Most of the time, a one-inch trim is all you need unless you have neglected your hair for a while, in which case you may need more than one inch. 

Turn Down the Heat on your Hot Tools

The temperature on your curling or flat iron you use daily should be at most 400

As a professional Cosmetologist, I set my flat iron to 450, but only when I'm giving a client a Keratin Smoothing treatment. 

I suggest my clients to stay around 375-390 for at-home use.

The hair around our faces is typically finer and more fragile, and those hairs receive the most abuse.

When smoothing out those tiny baby hairs, turn the temperature down to 350-375

Use Quality Hair Products

What makes a quality hair product? The ingredients

Look out for sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances and dyes

Stay away from those! 

You want to find a product line that is free of all I previously mentioned, has natural and nourishing ingredients, and is pH-balanced.

If you use a hair dryer or any hot tools, I suggest using a thermal heat protectant

Right now, I use Heated Defense by Kevin Murphy. It is a foam product and can be used in damp or dry hair.

Another product that I recommend clients use is K18

K18 is a revolutionary product that repairs damage by filling in the holes that chemicals or heat styling create. 

The K18 polypeptide reconnects disulfide bonds, reinforcing the strength of the hair. 

Now, that is not to say that K18 is a suitable replacement for a haircut.

Your Nutrition Can Affect Your Hair

I am not an MD, nor do I claim to be. All of the following information can be found through a simple Google search.

The health of your hair can sometimes be a direct reflection of your nutrition

Your diet, the nutrients you consume, the calories you intake, and the medication you take all play a role in the health of your hair

In order for our whole body, including our hair, to stay healthy, we have to eat nutrient-rich foods such as vitamins, iron, and proteins

If you are experiencing hair loss, shedding, or brittle hair, seeking the option of a medical professional may be in order. 

During Covid, many people experienced Covid-hair loss, which was later explained to be temporary hair loss after fever or illness

Each hair strand goes through growth cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen phases.

The anagen is the growth phase, which is the longest phase, lasting 3 to 5 years.

The catagen is the transition phase where hair follicles shrink, and hair growth slows.

The telogen phase is the resting phase where no growth happens, but the hair doesn't fall out either. 

Some scientists believe the telogen phase is the shedding phase as well and is divided into two parts: the telogen and exogen stages

These scientists believe the exogen phase is where the shedding occurs and lasts only 2 to 5 months. 

Telogen effluvium is a condition that accelerates hair from the anagen phase into the telogen phase and then into the exogen phase, doubling or tripling average daily hair loss. 

When the population experienced Covid-hair loss, our bodies slipped into temporary Telogen effluvium (TE), causing us to lose or shed more hair than we usually see. 

TE typically lasts a few months, then the shedding stops, and you start to grow your hair back. 

Praise the Lord! 

If you experience hair loss for longer than six months, please talk to your Doctor, as something else may be the culprit. 

Give Your Hair a Break!

This goes without much explanation. Some days, just give your hair a break!

If you're home on a Sunday, and you plan to cook, chillax, and watch some Netflix, why not give your hair a little TLC

hydrating masque, hair in a bun, and a good book are some of the best ways to get a little R&R!

If you have been a heavy blonde gal for a while, maybe consider transitioning into a 

low-maintenance blonde

Plenty of my clients are now a lived-in blonde, and they love it! 

They especially love how they can go longer between salon visits, too. 

Achieving your goal of healthy hair may take some time

Some clients go through a season where they don't use any heat or air-dry their hair.

Some clients stop flat ironing their hair and choose to embrace their natural curl pattern in order to restore the health of their hair.
